Joanne Graham was born in Petaluma, California. She has always been interested in art, and her blossoming talent was apparent and acknowledged very early in her childhood. By the time she entered high school she had developed her own unique style of creating art.
As a Sporting Dog Artist, Joanne is a dedicated supporter of the California Waterfowl Association, Ducks Unlimited, Canine Companions for Independence, and many other organizations. Joanne unselfishly volunteers her time and donates numerous prints at many events throughout the year.
I have often been asked why I paint animal portraits. It's because animals are the one constant in my life. Ever since I was a small child, all I have wanted were pets. As so many people know, animals offer you love and companionship that is often unequaled by any other. I have adored my dogs, cats, horses, and numerous other little creatures as each has come into my life. It is this love of animals that has made my decision to paint them an easy one.
Inevitably, as I am at my easel, one of my cats is on my lap, and one of my dogs is at my feet. My animals, and therefore my paintings, are a comfort in my life. My hope is that my paintings will have the same effect for all who see them.
Joanne Graham is a well-known wildlife and sporting dog artist. Her technique for creating art has earned her the praises of artists and laymen alike. Joanne does not use brushes. Her lifelike portraits of wildlife, sporting dogs, and people are painted utilizing her fingers as her only tools. She creates her works in soft pastels, which are pure color pigments.
All of Joanne's paintings are done strictly in pure pigment, soft pastel chalk. Originals must be done in larger sizes, because she uses only her fingers as blending tools. This limits her from being able to create smaller original artwork as another artist might do using brushes.
Working entirely from photographs, she only needs a good, clear photo of the subject matter. Joanne never changes the body structure of the subject; if your dog's ears are down or the mouth is open, she won't lift the ears or close the mouth.
Your original artwork is guaranteed to look like the subject you want painted, as long as the photograph you send her shows everything you wish to see. Joanne can also place your pet in any background. A good way to get started is look through her gallery of existing prints and choose something similar to what you would like to see. Then contact Joanne to discuss information about delivery times, prices, etc.
“Each and every commission gives me the opportunity to paint new and exciting subjects. I look forward to painting your loved one and I know you will be pleased to have a portrait that will last you for many generations.”
I have been a professional artist for over 30 years making my living solely from my art. I’ve worked with and received awards from organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, California Waterfowl Association, and many others. I’ve traveled all across the states showing and selling my work.
Due to a number of successive life changes, I am now choosing to no longer travel and sell my work, nor try to produce paintings for sale. I welcome commissions to paint for people.I don’t want to stop painting, as that is the core of my soul. That is why I have started what I call Hero K9's.
I am an avid supporter of law enforcement and I have a great love of the Canine Heroes working beside their handlers.
At the start of 2022 I decided to choose a new life path. I have been contacting the officers and departments of Fallen K-9’s offering to paint their portrait. I am certain I’m not the only artist with this idea but I’m hoping my paintings will bring comfort in my honoring of them. I do hope you will give me the honor of painting your heroes. Please contact me directly either by phone or email to discuss the possibilities.
